🌿 Story 1 – “Omuntu ni omuntu kubw’abantu”
(A person is a person through other people)
Early in the morning, mist rises over the hills of Butembo. Amina carries her basket full of cassava leaves to the market. On the way, she stops to help an elderly woman whose water jug has tipped over. The two laugh, exchange a few words, and Amina continues on her way. In the evening, when she is tired herself, a neighbour drops by and helps her stoke the fire. No one is left alone – everyone is part of everyone else. This is how the saying lives on in North Kivu: kindness is not a gift, but a circle that keeps closing.
💧 Story 2 – “Maji hufuata mkondo”
(Water follows its course)
On the shores of Lake Kivu, men sit under a mango tree. They talk about the weather, the harvest, and life. Women walk past them carrying water jugs, calmly and rhythmically, like the lake itself. When an argument arises, the eldest says: “Maji hufuata mkondo.” – Water finds its way. The words calm tempers, and the conversation flows on. In this world, kindness means having patience – and accompanying the course of events with an open heart.
